About

An atlas, not an argument

yhwh.cc is an independent, open research resource on the divine name: how it was written, transcribed, carried in personal names, rendered in translation, and reconstructed by scholars. It was built for researchers, students, translators and curious readers across traditions, and for people with no tradition at all.

Who runs it

The site is maintained by the yhwh.cc editors, who publish without personal names. This is deliberate. Authority here should rest on sources you can check and a review process you can watch, not on who the editors are. Every change is public, versioned and reasoned. If a credential would persuade you, the citation it points to should persuade you more.

Anonymity carries a matching obligation. The editors follow the same submission, disclosure and recusal rules as every contributor (see conflicts of interest). The project is not affiliated with any religious body, ministry, publisher or university, and it carries no advertising.

What it is not

  • Not a verdict on how the name “should” be pronounced, or whether it should be.
  • Not a devotional or polemical site.
  • Not a replacement for critical editions. It points to them.

Continuity

The code and data are openly licensed and versioned in a public repository, so the work can be checked, mirrored and continued by others. Data: CC BY 4.0. Code: MIT. Linked publications, images and museum assets keep their own rights.

Corpus version

Version 1.1.0, created 2026-11-08. Starter annotated research corpus, not exhaustive critical editions or validated pronunciation probabilities. It currently holds 16 artifacts, 19 attestations, 15 forms, 32 theophoric names, 5 textual witnesses, 11 pronunciations, 17 claims and 27 sources.

Change log

  • 2026-11-08: v1.0: populated with source-scoped claims; conservative uncertain manuscript and Egyptian identity flags.
  • 2026-11-08: v1.1.0: corrected Theodoret's Jewish form from "Ia" to "Aia" (Ἀϊά) per Quaest. in Ex. 15 (F-IA, AS-TIA, W-THEO-J, C04, A-THEODORET); replaced evaluative historical_support values for P-YAHWEH/P-YAHWOH with descriptive codes; tier vocabulary tightened (vocalized short forms → transmitted; secondary/catalogue-only readings and uncited renderings → disputed until collated); added places and renderings (seed).
